iPad and iPhone Games Launch - by Games Design students

Tubes,
thescience based game, created by games design students at Uclan, can can now bedownloaded for iphone or ipad

UclanGames Design M.A. Students, Harry Prestidge and Dan Startin, celebrate thelaunch of their first 'FlashBang Science' game on the iPad which is designed tobring fun into learning about Science.
Dan and Harry are currently developing more games in collaboration with Claire Holt and programmer Stephen Higgins of FlashBangScience.

The idea of FlashBang games is to maintainchildren’s interest in science following on from Flashbang Science workshops inschools. Claire Holt, Company Director, approached Games Design Course Leader,Bev Bush at UCLan who introduced Dan and Harry, to work with programmerStephen Higgins to produce a series of science based games.

Workshop and Lecture with Arthur Parsons from Travellers Tales Ltd.

Towards the end of semester 1 we were very lucky to haveanother visit and lecture from Arthur Parsons,Game Director from one of the highest profile companies in the world, Travellers Tales/ TT Games, owned by Warner Bros.

Nicola came into Uclan with Lead Artist, Nicola Daly to givea lecture, and set a brief and workshop for the first year Games Designstudents.

Arthur set an exciting challenge for the students to designgame design concepts for a Lego game.

He spent the day with us for the start of the project, whichlasted three weeks and then returned for the presentation, assessment and critsession at the completion of the brief.

Arthur provided prizes for the top ten students withinteresting and comprehensive game design ideas, which were given out after thepresentation and assessment.

We owe a great amount of appreciation to Arthur for hisconsistent encouragement and nurturing of our students and also to TravellersTales for the opportunity for collaboration between academia and industry.

The brief was also opened up across the whole games studentconsort at Uclan and year 3 and 2 students, also had the chance to chat withArthur and Nic and gather valuable insights into lfe as a games artist ordesigner.

Peter Field - Designer at Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, CA.

Peter has been a Designer at Naughty Dog for just over a year now and he's enjoying working in California. Prior to that he worked at Ninja Theory as a Games Designer from July 2008 – February 2011 (2 years 8 months) and as a Junior Designer before that for 2 years from 2008 – 2010

Cotton Pops game for Preston Guild

A unique collaboration between RM Productions in conjunction with Games Design students at UCLan and Lancaster University has resulted in the first Preston Guild mobile App game. RM Productions’ (sister company to Black Bull Studios) challenged them earlier in the year to come up with a mobile games idea in celebration of the 2012 Guild.

Georgina Cronshaw, Will Davies and James Burton’s Cotton Pops game idea was selected in May. RM Productions then introduced the trio to two students at Lancaster University, Jamie Briers and Will Moorhouse, who had the programming skills needed to complete the project.
Music for the game was created by Nathaniel Jorden Apostol (NJ) as part of a collaboration with Uclan BA (Hons) Music practice students.

Dynamic new game ‘Cotton Pops’ was launched at a special event at the new Preston Visitors’ Information centre where the team demonstrated it to key members of the Preston Guild team and the media.

The app, which was developed to mark the Preston Guild, brings together Lancashire's traditional textile industry with modern mobile technology.

The game is designed for Apple's iPhone 4 or later handsets and iPad but releases for other manufacturer's handsets are planned.

IP Integration Prop brief Second year 2011

Project: IP Integration Prop brief The task was to design and model THREE props for an already existing Intellectual property, they needed to be fully textured as Game Ready Art Assets and ready for import into UDK for presentation. Through the use of sketch work and research students were asked to explore the design of their Art Assets before committing to a 3D model. They had a Polygon Budget of 2500 polys (triangles) for all models together.

Learning Outcomes
Develop skills required for generating industry standard game assets.
Develop idea realisation skills through sketch work and 3 Dimensions.
Understand restrictions that are in place within industry.
Develop work for exporting to the UDK engine and presentation skills.

Role out the Barrel

As a recap of the basics of Maya for the first 3D modelling brief of the new semester we challenged the second year games design students to produce a low polygon model of a barrel.
The brief requires attention to best practise guidelines for export to the Udk engine and to use the uv map and texture effectively. Students are encouraged to hand paint their own textures in Photoshop with a touch pen.

Ailish is just starting her second year and has a real feel for light in her digital work.

Dare to be Digital win brings chance of BAFTA for Uclan Games students

Our very own Daniel Scholes, just starting his 3rd year on the
BA (Hons) Games Design course at Uclan was celebrating a fantastic win this last week at

DARE TO BE DIGITAL 2011 in Dundee ;-) alongside the rest of the team.

'Evolved Ape'

also comprised of recent graduates from the
BSc (Hons) Computer Games Development at Uclan Joe Hurst, Mat Stevenson and Stuart Brown. They teamed up with Mallath Abbas from Liverpool Screen School to become one of three teams to win in the Dare to be Digital competition.

Their game 'Dreamweaver' is a puzzle-platformer for the PC which becomes nightmarish when your animal friends starts to attack …

Rhoda Daly was there on the day to see the winners announced.

"The team did the University soooo proud. They worked really well together and by all accounts have really put the hours in to get this prototype completed. Their presentation was both professional and engaging. Throughout the weekend they had the public constantly queuing up to play the game and they were so friendly and helpful with everybody playing.

As a team they really stood out, both in working together as a group, working with the other teams and in their positive and professional attitude throughout the event."

The prize giving was nerve racking as it was the very last award to be announced - They are the 3rd overall winner of the Dare to be Digital 2011 competition and now go up against two other winners; Digital Knights and Swallowtails, to compete for the exclusive 'Ones to Watch' BAFTA award 2012. The standard of work from the winning teams was excellent.

The 'Evolved Ape' team received £2,500

The Degree Shows at Uclan are well and truly underway and are open to the public until Saturday 18th June inclusive.

The B.A. (Hons) Games Design degree show is being shown in the ground floor of the Victoria Building and all are welcome to attend.

Futures Module: IP opportunity for the near future

Collaboration between Music Practice and Games Design students

Simon Partridge, Senior Lecturer on the Music Practice course, recently invited bev Bush to give a presentation of Games Design student work for Music students and staff as part of a new collaboration between the courses. This was done with a view to bring music and games students together for joint projects within the school. This is now up and running and working well on an informal basis. Next year we plan to introduce this link to the course in a formal way through collaboration on the 2nd year games design module.

We have encouraged the students from both disciplines to set up a Facebook group where they can discuss ideas and share opportunites for collaboration.

This has worked very well so far in the run up to the 'Dare to be Digital' competition where games design students come together with music and programming students to devlop a game IP for the competition.

WE have encouraged the students in Games design to set up
their own group on 'deviantart website, where they can post work they have done and share and receive comments. This has proved a popular place and we can see some good digital painting skills demonstrated there.
For example -
2nd year student, Rob Hayes, has recently posted some interesting development work of his own.
He describes it as a small project he's set himself to model a town scene.
Modelled in maya, rendered in udk and painted over in Photoshop.

First year 'side scroller' project

Side Scroller concept and 3d Artwork Brief for Year 1 games design students

Design environments, character heroes and enemies as concept images and apply the designs to planes in Maya as a digitally hand painted textures to form a side scrolling scene. 3d modelling can also be used in Maya to enhance the scene.

Learning Outcomes

· To develop concept art design skills and digital painting
· To develop an understanding of alpha texturing and how to use it in a maya scene

'Company roles' group project

Year 1 students were allocated groups to work in for the 'Company roles' project recently.

The Aim of the brief was to encourage learning outcomes where students could :

· Understand the different roles in a games company and express that in the most clear and concise way through the work they produce

· Work as a team

The task as a group was to choose one of four games companies and fill in the roles of various team members within that company, then design a small downloadable game that is themed to fit with that company’s current and past games. Students needed to do some research, develop the game idea and they were then asked to present it (as a group) to the class.

Really 'Well done' to Emma Smith, one of our ist year students.
Emma has secured a place in London's Mediatonic games studios for work experience oer the summer.
Mediatonic are an independent developer based in the UK.
They design and build games for a range of digital platforms including Flash, Social, iPhone and PSN. They make cool things for and also publish their own games!

Travellers Tales Designers visit the Games Design Course

We were lucky to have a visit recently from two of Travellers Tales Ltd top design people, Arthur Parsons and Stephen Sharples. Arthur has made several visits to Uclan over the last few years and it's a true incentive for the students to show him their work and receive feedback from someone in industry who is as experienced as Arthur.

We are proud to say that Stephen is an ex-student from Uclan games design and he's now a Lead designer at TT with credit on several titles.

Having them visit was a lovely way to spend the last class before the Easter holiday.

Student Successes: Games Design student Katie lands job at Travellers Tales

Katie Clague, one of our Games Deisgn students at Uclan completed her degree last year and is also studying for an M.A. in Games Design.
Katie recently started work at Travellers Tales and we are hearing good reports about her progress.
We are delighted that Katie has gained this great opportunity which gives her such a great start in her career.

Student Success: placements at Vype Games

Twelve students from our 2nd year Games Design group at Uclan have been lucky enough to be offered work placement at Vype Games this year where they have had experience in designing and producing assets for a new game. Vype are Web 2.0 App developers who provide software development and website design for business, including custom built software on server, desktop or mobile devices to manage business and client information.They are currently developing a game and our students have been invited to design the visual assets for this.

Watch this space as the project develops for news on publication.

The students are being funded by the Uclan Futures scheme to have 6 days of work experience each, over a period of time. They've risen to the occasion brilliantly and we're really proud of the way that they have presented themselves professionally and organised themselves as a team to share updates and create an effective body of work. The main complaint being that if they catch the slow bus to Preston instead of the 'Express' on the way back they end up having to travel through 'Mordor' before they get home!

This year winning team members have once again been chosen from the annual Black Bull mobile games design competition which involved 48 2nd Year Games Design students from Uclan. This resulted in some excellent design work and presentations.

The 2011 competition has taken a different form to previous years. In the lead up to Preston Guild 2011, the management group working with the GUILD KEY steering group have decided the students will create a mobile game for the Guild Celebrations. To do this, they have choosen an ‘A Team’ from the games design student presentations but will still work with Lancaster University programmers to develop the game.

This year, a further 4 ‘notables’ were added to the pot resulting in the presentation of 9 pitches for a GUILD KEY mobile game. These additions were from:

James Burton, Alex Belingham, Ethan McKinley-Rooke and Marcus Izaquias.

The competition was held on Tuesday, 3^rd May at UCLan

A panel of four expert judges were invited to choose the winning pitch which will be ‘worked up’ into the GUILD KEY game over Summer 2011 and scheduled for release in October 2011. The panel also selected THREE UCLan students from the nine contestants who will work together with programming student(s) from Lancaster University in ONE team to make the game. Mentoring and guidance from the Guild Key steering group will be provided throughout.

From the finalists Will Davies and James Burton were selected to work with Georgina Cronshaw in developing her winning game pitch. Two programming students from Lancaster University will be working with the UCLan students in completing this project.

The proposed completion date is October 2011.

Student Successes: Blitz games Studio placement

Andrea Wastlund, one of Uclan's 2nd year Games Design students, recently submitted a sample of her games design work as part of the application process for a place at an Open Day at Blitz Games studios.
This year Blitz Open Days were open to all second and third/final year students, studying any game course or game-releated course.
Since her vist to Blitz studios, Andrea has asked about a work placement opportunity and after being interviewed she is delighted to have been offered a placement for eleven months with the studio.
Andrea takes her work seriously and we are sure she will gain valuable experience from this opportunity and make the most of every minute.

What is an SDK?
An SDK is a model that’s been released to the community for download from the internet by its original artist, with the purpose of being used to help others learn to be better texture artists by letting them focus on just that: texturing.

Year 2: Hand painted texturing project

The task is to texture one of the SDK meshes provided and then import that into UDK for final presentation. No changes to the models are allowed and no additional props are allowed. Rigging and posing the character is ok.

Seamless textures for 3d meshes

Year 2 students were asked to create some seamless textures. Environments are almost always dominated by seamless textures and therefore the skill required to create them properly is a very valuable skill to have. They are also a great way to optimise the use of texture space for vehicles/characters and general modular assets in environments.

Topical digital painting with sample textures

This task is to test a student's ability to interpret a topic and produce an A4 final digital painting to be used as concept art for a 3d scene in a game. Textures samples must also be considered and produced that are derived from the finished concept art .

Games design students launch new game with FLASHBANG science

Flashbang Science has just lanched a game 'Flashbang Tubes' with the help of two Uclan games design students, Dan Startin and Harry Prestidge. This new addition to Flashbang’s range of services in the education field will be introduced to children.

The company offers a real science opportunity to children who come along to Claire Holt’s mobile science laboratory. The laboratory is run by professional scientists who are there to provide “hands on” practical workshops in a custom-built lab.

Claire developed her latest idea based on maintaining children’s interest in science following on from her visits to schools and with the help of students from UCLAN’s game design course, Dan Startin/ Harry Prestidge and managed by Stephen Higgins the online games programme was devised.

Claire says “I want the games to build upon Flashbang Science workshops. They are to be educational and fun games linked with real life science and industry. Most children have looked at the website after their Flashbang experience and have asked for some more involvement. This seemed the most obvious way forward in this modern technological society. I can only thank the guys at UCLAN’s School of art, design and performance for all their help, without whom we certainly wouldn’t be at the stage we are now. Their dedication to completing this game says wonders for them both and the school as a whole.”

Stephen Higgins, most instrumental in the programming and development of the game concludes, “A key goal in developing our first game for the web was to seamlessly integrate it with the broader website, which required a design which was not only creative but precise. I am looking forward to taking the skills gained during the development of Flashbang Tubes, and applying it to create ever more engaging games and other experiences.”

'Flashbang Tubes' was be launched at UCLAN on Friday 8 April in The Games Design studio, Victoria Building.

A selection of character and vehicle 3d models purposely designed to fit with the style of particular licensed games.
These have been created this semester in Maya and Photoshop and imported into UDK engine by Year 2 Uclan Games Design students.

The task was to design and model a character or a vehicle for an already existing Intellectual property, it had to be fully textured as a Game Ready character and imported into UDK for presentation. Through the use of sketch work and research, students explored the design of a character or vehicle before committing to a 3D model. They were also asked to produce an orthographic concept sheet before starting the modeL.

Students had a Polygon Budget of 6000 Triangles or less depending on the technical specifications as well as the visual style of the chosen IP.
No textures bigger than 1024x1024 and no more than two textures for a character or vehicle.

First year meets Second Life

Our First year had a taste of a Second Life this week when they were introduced to the software. A strange and random event ensued with the building of bizarre and surreal objects and the deformation of avatars.

Good fun and an intro in virtual reality which is fast becoming an new source for employment as more virtual worlds come into existence and more elearning resources are developed. The 3d and texturing skills of the students can become useful in this area.

Then the rest of the class experience ;-)

Congrats to the Uclan M.A. Games Design finalists on their recent show. Nine different students work was featured in this display which was part of the School of Art, Design and Performance M.A. Exhibition.
